Curator: Hartmut Schlueter. That is the only fire museum in Germany where little and grown-up museum visitors can make their dreams come true to be a real firefighter. Theme-oriented exhibitions and special events cater to that idea. The museum houses a vast collection in all aspects of firefighting as well as dozens of motorized and ready-to-roll maintained fire apparatus among a Magirus 3 vehicle task force (2 engines 1 truck) from the late 1950s. This private group in Bavaria restores and maintaines a collection of the famous air-cooled Magirus-Deutz fire apparatus built between 1962 and 1977 still very popular in Germany. The collection is made up by 45!! originally restored fully equipped and licenced pumpers aerials and special vehicles ready to roll - a fire department in itself. The about 20 motorized fire apparatus can by view in the Technik-Museum in Speyer and is only a small part of dozens of exhibtions on everything which moves on wheels rails and tracks (large tank and military collection). Also a gorgeous collection of airplanes among them a Jumbo Jet B 747-200 and the recently obtained Concorde. The two museums which also maintain well-equipped gift shops and restaurants are a true family event as they are open daily 0900 to 1800 hrs. A large lavishly illustrated catalog at an affordable rate can be obtained. This is a must for all you technic freaks on your next visit to Germany. This is the National German Fire Museum which counts about 24.000 visitors yearly. Two large halls with an exhibition space of 16000 square meters feature an outstanding display on fire fighting and fire prevention from medieval until present times from the leather bucket to a jet-stream powered engine on a military tank chassis. The oldest hand pump (1624) the first horse-drawn ladder (1808) and the first electro-motorized aerial (1903) can be viewed. There is a large research library with special emphasis on fire and fire prevention in harbors and aboard. A number of rigs cannot be shown due to limited space but are securely stored for future exhibtions. A large museum festival is to be held every 2 years (next one expected June 2005). The RSB Museum is by far the best oif its kind in Portugal and probably one of the best in Europe as well. Not to be missed! The preserved fleet of old apparatus consists of more than 20 rare pieces ranging from 18th century hand drawn to 20th century automotive all well preserved and in good running order. A considerable amount of these vehicles is now at public display in an excellent and recent purpose built museum annex to Battalion 3 Station (facing the corner of the huge uptown Colombo Shopping Mall direct access by subway station Colegio Militar). We advise to call the curator before visiting in order to check for opening hours small gear and historical information is also on display inside the museum but you must inquiry for the whereabouts of the old apparatus not currently on display. With luck you may obtain from the curator a special permit to visit the maintenance depot for those. 1/31/2010

The Lothian & Borders Fire Brigade operates this fire museum in Edinburgh. It contains a wide variety of exhibits including Edinburgh's first manual fire pump by Tilley. A steamer from the Welbeck Abbey Fire Brigade and several motor fire engines including two WWII emergency fire appliances painted gray are also featured.
