The Baltimore City Fire Museum is operated by members of the Box 414 Association and has been in operation more than five years. The museum is located in a fabulous old firehouse that is a landmark building which was built in 1853 by the Independent Fire Company. The structure has a tall tower that was inspired by Giotto's Campanile or Bell Tower in Florence Italy. The 117 foot structure was the first tower where volunteer firemen kept watch over the area known as Old town Baltimore. The building was taken over by the city in 1859 and served as quarters for Engine Co. No. 6 ever since. In the 1880's a four-face clock was installed in the rebuilt tower top under which hung a huge bell used for sounding alarms of fire. After Engine Co. No. 6 moved to the new Old town Fire Station which marked the closing of the oldest active house in the United States the public converted the building to a fire museum for use and enjoyment. 1/9/2004

fdny62@aol.com huntley@fireboat.org Placed in service in 1931 the 130' fireboat John J Harvey was the world's most powerful when built. Arguably the first modern large fireboat she marked the successful transition from steam power. Retired after serving longer than any other FDNY boat she was declared surplus and auctioned to her present owners in early 1999. Within six months she was restored to full operating condition including her fire pumps which produce nearly 20 000 gpm. The John J. Harvey LTD was established to preserve this historic vessel which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in June of 2000. The Harvey makes regular trips throughout the year around New York Harbor and surrounding waters. The water displays use all eight deck pipes and are the feature of every trip. Ultimately plans are to expand into a full museum on marine fire fighting. Visitors must call ahead for an appointment. See our web site at http://www.fireboat.org. The museum was started in 1981 when the first piece was found in an antique shop in Galena Illinois. The 1860's Rumsey was in need of a very extensive restoration. Much research went into finding out just what the Rumsey Hand Pumper really looked like. This led to the beginning of a deeper interest in hand operated era of fire fighting equipment. The search for information on the Rumsey led to information on other fire fighting artifacts including hand tools paintings firemarks and nozzles to name a few. Each piece of equipment had to be restored along with locating tools lanterns nozzles and other equipment authentic to the period. Major exhibits include: 1825 Jefferies & Nuttal 4 wheel hose carriage 1840's portable cistern 1850's hose cart 1860's Rumsey Hand Pumper 1870's Rumsey Hand Pumper 1870's Hand Ladder Wagon 1880's Hose Cart and a 1865 Fireman's Drink Cart. This is a very unusual piece and the only one known to exist. It originally belonged to a fire department on Long Island. Admission is free. 3/12/2006
